15 Minute Finish Rating...

Does standard drywall have 15 min. finish rating or is this identified as the "fire resistant" drywall.  And does a detached residential garage even require a 15 min. finish when nm is used?  I have read and read and it seems as though exposed nm is acceptable in an attached garage but not in a detached garage???  I still can't seem to wrap my head around the logic of some of the NEC codes....

Is it a violation of code to run exposed NM in a residential detached garage?  The wire is spanning through studs at about 8.5' and then ran closely down the stud to each receptacle and/or switch at 48" from the floor, back up the stud to the 8.5' and on to the next recep. or switch.  Is the wire ran through the studs at 8.5' considered unprotected???

hi...

my electrician walked out on me because i asked him to itemize everything since i wasn't happy about his "extras" that he's charging me for...  i already paid him $9500 of the original $10k bid but he only finished about 80% of the work...

there were a number of extras that he recommended as well as some that i requested...  he decided to jack up the bid to $16.3k...  which included a charge of $1650 for cat6 wiring to 6 locations, $500 for a dedicated 15a circuit for a whirlpool bath...  there were 7 more switches, 13 more receptacles, 5 more recessed lights, 16 more lighting locations and 1 more smoke detector...  is that $6k worth of "extras"?

anyway, i've decided to go with someone else to finish up but so far nobody wants to finish up others' work...  worst case i'm thinking is i'll do it myself...  i already wired a 15a dedicated circuit for my whirlpool tub with no issues so i think i'm up to the challenge...

i just need some guidance to make sure i don't electrocute myself...

here's a photo of the panel...  what's going in the circled area?

also, other than the hots not being connected to the breakers (for the most part) does anyone see anything amiss with this panel?

thanks

hi everyone.

i am installing 4" recessed lighting throughout my main floor.  my house was built in the 40's and the previous owner installed drywall over the existing lath and plaster ceiling.  so I've cut a trench down the center of my room to drill floor joists to run wiring and cut my holes for the new lights.

the lights are fire rated and do not require insulated cans for a traditional installation in a drywall ceiling.

question i have is with the additional 1/2 to 3/4" of lath and plaster above the drywall, should these lights now have insulated cans or should i be fine with the cans I've got?  there is no insulation in ceiling.

any suggested would be appreciated.

thanks

Hi everyone, this is my first post.  Hope it works out!

I have a new detached two car garage with two 115v 15A circuits in it.  I want to put in a 12000 BTU window air conditioner.  One circuit runs 10 fluoresent bulbs in the garage and a few in the house but also runs a few outlets in the house that see occasional use by a 12A vacuum cleaner.  The other is solely used for the door opener and outlets in the garage where I often use a 12 amp skill saw.

Both circuits are aqccessible, which one should I choose?

Hello everyone,

I am trying to replace a 40-year old garage door opener that stopped working, and the motor reads "250v"-- are 250 volt openers standard? does the 250v mean something completely different? or will I have to re-wire it to a standard 110v outlet type to put in a new opener? The original cover has most likely been lost to time; the brand was Overhead Door company.

I haven't purchased any new openers yet, making sure I know what I am getting into first :-)

The door is not especially large --9'x7' not sure of their weight; if it matters, the door will likely be replaced shortly as well.

Thanks for any and all help!

Hi All,

Planning on installing a Zip contract 2 point of use overhead water heater, 10 litre 2kw.

Query can I use current mcb & rcb installed in distribution box which was used for 3kw immersion water heater.

If not can I use a 45amp 30ma mcb and if so what rcb rating should I also use.

I am assumming that the old water immersion circuit would be ok or would the rating be too strong being it 3kw as opposed to the now 2kw.

Cheers,

Nutrifix.

I had a tv plugged into an outlet in my garage. The tv crapped out due to bad wiring {I think}. The reason I say bad wiring is because when I have a radio plugged in I can hear static through the speakers due to the wiring. Garage was built in the 70's. What do I look for when checking the wiring from the house to the garage and then all the garage wiring itself?

Hi everyone. I'm new here, so I hope I am not posting this in the wrong place.

Is there a good book or site with instructions and tips for running computer networking cable in the walls in existing construction? I did it in my former house, which was a one story Ranch house with a big crawlspace. It was very easy. But my current house is two stories on a slab. Not only can I not go under the house, but I need to get things to the second floor. I want network ports in at least six rooms, covering both floors and spanning the width of the house. I can put the patch panel in the coat closet in the middle of the house.

I want the end result to look as clean as possible. I'm not ok with cables running outside of the walls. I am expecting to have to cut and patch a lot of drywall, but I'm sure there are right and wrong ways to go about this project. And ways that will result in as little drywall cutting as possible. And what about running perpendicular to joists? Is it ok to drill holes that way? Even if I do, that would require cutting a hole in the ceiling every few feet I think. I hope there's a better way.

What resources should I read?
