I am renovating my modest home's living room, but, since the walls and ceiling are basically stripped bare, I would like to consider "toys and luxuries" which would need to be wired in upfront here, such as ipad syncing controls for stereo or lighting, decent built-in speaker systems, etc. What kinds of devices are contemporary homes incorporating nowadays? I am not super-nerdy, but a couple "gee whiz" devices might be fun to have! Suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I am going to install some can lights throughout the house soon. I have one light in the center of each room that is already wired up. I will be patching the existing light boxes up to run the new can lights, utilizing the wiring that is already present.
When hooking the extra lights up should I use 12/2 or 14/2 wire for running them in parallel? There will probably be no more than 3 or 4 can lights per room ran with CFLs. The current lights that are in each room take up to 3 bulbs per fixture.
Can you install 6 recessed light off of one circuit by starting at a switch that is designed to turn an outlet on and off for a lamp that sits on a table. i've determined all of the outlets in one room are on the same circuit. The max wattage that will be used in that room if all recessed lights and TV etc are on would be approx. 1,500. the electrical wire in place is 14 g.
I have a battery operated 12v emergency light located in my basement. It has two lamps on it. I would like to remove one of them and place it upstairs in my dining room to cover that and the living room. I have some old 14/3 SO cable lying around and wondered if you guys thought if it would be acceptable to use this. Also, can I run this in the wall cavity as long as my terminations are inside the box where I mount the light? Is there any part of the code that covers this or any violation of the code?
Thanks, Rick
I would love to put a ceiling fan in my living room but my husband isn't anxious about climbing into the attic to anchor it. He's not really that handy. I was wondering if a fan could be hung like light fixture, by a chain. Obviously, the ceiling would have to have a joist to put the hook into so the fan could hang. The chain and cord would be loosely hung near outlet so it could be plugged in.

We are just beginning to start with our kitchen remodel. Today, I mapped out all the circuits and this is what I found.
Circuit # 7 - 20 amp circuit to 1 back splash outlet then to 3 kitchen wall outlets, then to a closet outlet and closet ceiling light and then to a side porch light! Circuit # 8 - 20 amp to Dishwasher and Disposal Circuit # 9 - 20 amp circuit to microwave and kitchen ceiling lights. 2 patio recessed lights and dining room ceiling light. Circuit # 12 - 20 amp circuit to another back splash outlet then to 2 dining room wall outlets. Circuit # 14 - 20 amp to Refrigerator only Circuit # 18 - 15 amp to GFCI outlet in garage then that feeds 3 outlets for 3 bathroom outlets and 1 outside patio outlet. I going to have to add 1 more back splash outlet due to increase in counter space. I'll put the microwave on a dedicated circuit. So I need 2 additional breakers but I only have 1 blank spot in the breaker panel. I guess I can add one of those slim tandem breakers. So my question, is it ok to have additional wall outlets on the same circuit as a back splash outlet? If it's ok I'll lighten up circuit # 7 by putting some of those wall outlets on the additional back splash outlet. Oh, I have 2 20 amp circuits I did not get identified yet! I'll get to those tomorrow. thanks!
I want to run a new 12/3 to wire a room added on the back of the house. One circuit will be 6 wall outlets. The other will be a ceiling fan and 4 recessed cans. Can I add 2 outdoor lights-using standard outdoor bulbs-to the same circuit as the ceiling lights? Do I use the wall switch(box properly sized) as the junction for the outlet wiring and feed to wall switch for outdoor lights?
I have a circuit that is for 2 of the bedrooms upstairs then also runs downstairs to what used to be a garage but I am now looking to refinish as a finished area. the circuit goes to 3 light fixtures from a switch in the unfinished room and I want to cut it off and run a new circuit for recessed lights in that area. I dont know where the original wire comes from upstairs, does it matter if I just wire nut it in the unfinished room and leave it as a junction box?
Need some help solving this clicking.
So I have just installed 16 pot lights in my kitchen and dining room. I have 8 on one circuit going directly from the panel to the switch then the switch to the pots. 15amp breaker. Same for the other 8. The brand is hallo 4 inch and they have quick connect for the 14-2 wire. All the pots are grounded and the beaker is grounded at the panel. So I will have the pot lights on for say 1/2 hour or so, doesn't matter what 8 I have on but once I turn them off about 2 - 10 minutes later I hear I clicking noise coming from different pots at different times. I have followed all the directions and did not overload either circuit because I have 8 cans on each. If anyone could shed some light on this for me that would be great. I just don't know how this clicking sound can happen if the light are turned off. Never happens when they are on. Could it be that they are cooling down?.
I am planning on installing recessed lights in my basement. The ceiling is currently unfinished, so I have complete access to it. Would you suggest I use 5" or 6" lights? Also, I have attached a picture of dimensions and the small circles are where I have the lights going. Using a total of 15 lights in 3 rows. Is this too many lights? Is the spacing correct?
